It is Indeed a New Thing
A New Way of Approaching Spirituality
Neurotheology is in its infancy, but the basis for this new way of approaching spirituality has roots that go back to the New Testament of the Bible and to an ancient Greek philosopher, Galen (129-199/217 AD). Galen was the first to refer to the collection of nuclei within your brain as the thalamus: a Greek word for inner room, chamber, or closet.
Neurotheology holds that this is the same inner room referenced in Mathew 6:6-7 (NIV): “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father who is unseen.” When viewed through the lens of metaphor, you will discover a new way to interpret scripture that is both exciting and awe-inspiring.
Through the leadership of Walter Pousson, Jr., (who has engaged in a lifetime of theological training and education), The Presence brings together an eclectic collection of people from all walks of life and a variety of faiths, for spiritual study, meditation, and community that offers the kind of comfort and solace many have been seeking. For all of them, it is a new thing.
Walter Pousson, JR
After his studies at Immaculata Seminary in Lafayette, Louisiana, Walter earned a liberal arts degree in Philosophy from the University of Louisiana (Lafayette, LA) “because there was no Theology program,” he explains. Following those studies, Walter earned a Master of Pastoral Studies degree from the Loyola Institute for Ministry (New Orleans, LA).
Future study included time spent with Fr. Thomas Keating in Snowmass, Colorado where Walter became a Centering Prayer Guide for contemplative meditation. And, significantly, Walter also studied with Richard Rohr, OFM at The Living School for Action and Contemplation in Albuquerque as a member of the Charter Class in 2013.
Walter holds a Professional Certification in Spiritual Direction / Spiritual Formation from the Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary in Chicago and is a Certified Lay Minister in the Louisiana Conference of the United Methodist Church.
Along the way, a unique thread wove through his sacred studies. As a blues musician and Honorary Member of the Louisiana Blues Hall of Fame (singer/songwriter, guitarist) Walter found that he naturally incorporated spirituality in his secular performances, also folding his inspired musical talent into his sacred work. “He’s found a way to bring a resonance and specific vibrations to his teachings through original music that truly lifts the soul,” explains one student.
Walter Jr.’s relaxed style has been central to his work as music minister, worship leader, spiritual director, and retreat/seminar/conference leader. He also facilitates labyrinth walks and contemplative prayer sessions.
Beyond his intensive study, Walter began teaching guitar to cardiologists and neurologists, which gave him the unique opportunity to gather their insight into human anatomy and the science behind the brain. Quite a remarkable synchronicity in a life that has all roads converging at this point in time, with the advent of Neurotheology and the formation of The Presence.
It is indeed a new thing.
